Can particle boards be used for outdoor applications?
Particle boards, also known as chipboards or engineered wood, are composite materials made from wood particles mixed with a binder and pressed into sheets. They are commonly used for indoor applications, such as furniture, cabinets, and flooring, due to their affordability and versatility. However, when it comes to outdoor applications, particle boards have some limitations that need to be considered.
The primary concern with using particle boards outdoors is their susceptibility to moisture and humidity. Particle boards are not naturally resistant to water and tend to absorb moisture, causing them to swell, warp, and deteriorate over time. This can compromise their structural integrity and reduce their lifespan. In addition, particle boards are prone to fungal growth and decay when exposed to moisture, further exacerbating their susceptibility to damage.
To overcome these limitations, manufacturers have developed moisture-resistant particle boards specifically designed for outdoor use. These boards are treated with water-resistant coatings or chemicals to enhance their resistance to moisture and minimize swelling. These moisture-resistant particle boards are commonly labeled as 'exterior-grade' or 'waterproof' and are more suitable for outdoor applications compared to standard particle boards.
However, even with moisture-resistant qualities, particle boards are still not entirely suitable for all outdoor applications. They should not be directly exposed to extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain or direct sunlight, as this can cause them to deteriorate more quickly. Additionally, they should be protected from prolonged contact with water, such as constant splashing or submersion, as this can still lead to swelling and damage over time.
In this final analysis, even though particle boards may be made more resistant by moisture proofing, they may not be best suited for every outdoor use; they could still come in handy with some outdoor undertakings such as building temporary structures without supporting any load on them as long as no rain falls on these boards all day long or even without significant amounts of snow.
