Are laminates durable and scratch-resistant?
Laminates are known for their strength and, above all, the strength to stand wear and tear on an everyday basis, which has made them a favorite in many spheres of use. Their strength generally comes from their construction. The core layer, in most cases, is high-density fiberboard, which provides strength. On top of the core layer is a hard plastic laminate. This plastic layer is meant to prevent wear and tear on the layer below, which is a decorative layer.
Despite this toughness, laminates are not completely impervious to scratches. Basically, the scratch sensitivity of laminate will come from the quality and the finishing. High-pressure laminates are much more scratch-resistant than the low-pressure ones.
While laminates are not as resilient as quartz or granite, for instance, even they are susceptible to damage from sharp objects or a lot of use. Therefore, minor scratches are easily handled by the material, but deep ones might damage the surface and be hard to fix.
